The ‘Id’ took control
March 31, 2010
I know I set my alarm, it was for set for 7am…
My trusty little Nokia phone has never failed me before, and as normal I set the alarm, turned out my light, and went to sleep. The following morning I wake to sunshine and that thought of ‘oh, it’s pretty light for 7am’ and quickly realise that I have overslept. Looking at my phone I see that it is 7:57am, 3 minutes from when I was planning to meet someone for a training ride. A quick text message outlining my situation to the training buddy and I was fast asleep again.
When I wake again 2 hours later, I figure that I must have needed the extra sleep, but felt a little guilty for missing a great morning on the bike, and some much needed kilometers in the legs.
Throughout the day I keep trying to recall if I remember turning off my alarm during a sleepy revolt, but I have no memory of such an event.
I know the body and the mind are pretty good at telling you what it needs, and also what it wants, but I didn’t think I would find evidence of so easily.
Freud and all of his psychological studies came up with some interesting theories and concepts including the Id, ego, and super-ego which are the three parts of the psychic apparatus defined in Sigmund Freud’s structural model of the psyche.
Apparently the “Id acts as according to the “pleasure principle”, seeking to avoid pain or unpleasure aroused by increases in instinctual tension.”
So the point of my ramblings…. I think my Id took control just as Freud said it would, made me turn off the alarm without knowing, therefore allowing me to sleep in, avoid pain, and get some recovery. Good work Id!
